Old Style Air Cleaner for TwinCam

Diversion of old siren cover …

The TwinCam FAT BOY-based custom was completed several days ago. As you see, its style is truly majestic, a style representative of the glorious history of Harley Davidson. No Harley user would raise an objection to this style of the historical FL series. However, I was looking for ways to give this custom its own something special while building it, and a cast-metal cover sitting lonely at the corner of our warehouse caught my attention.

The cover is one of the cover parts of “siren” mounted on Harley’s models for the Police, almost certainly during the time of Knuckle Head and Side Valve. Its nostalgic design finally struck home! I had repurposed the same parts as Air Cleaner covers for Old Harleys long before, but it was my first time to use it for a TwinCam. But I knew from experience that inspirational ideas conceived in this manner do work most of the time.

Therefore I quickly set up a meeting to discuss the plan. I told the staff what I had in mind, and the next day, I was greeted by the cover sitting perfectly at the center of the engine!! It goes great with Ken’s Factory’s Rocker Cover!! The owner really liked what I did, and it was a great success.

オールド・サイレンカバーを流用…

先日完成致しましたTwinCam FAT BOYをベースとしたカスタムなのですが、そのスタイルはご覧の通り正々堂々の王道を行くスタイル。。。栄光のハーレーの歴史に綿々と刻まれた、このFL系スタイルに異を唱えるハーレー乗りは皆無だと思うのですが、それでも、何かこう、キラリと光る個性を宿してやる事は出来ないものかと思案をしていたある日、倉庫の片隅にポツンと置かれていた鋳物のカバーに目が止まりました。

そのカバーは当時、ナックルとかサイドバルブの時代で間違い無いと思うのですが、ポリス用のハーレーに取り付けられていた “サイレン” のカバーパーツでありまして、そのノスタルジックなデザインを眺めつつ、遂にピン! と来た訳です。随分前に、何度かオールドハーレーのエアークリーナーのカバーとして流用をした事はありますが、TwinCamに使用をするのは今回が初めて… でも、こうしたタイミングでの閃きは経験上、上手く行く事が殆どでありまして…

そんな訳で、早速作戦会議を招集。私の意図している事をスタッフに告げ、翌日出社をしてみますと、ほれ、ご覧の通〜り!! 何とも良い具合にエンジンの真ん中に鎮座しているではありませんか!! Ken’s Factory社製のロッカーカバー等を装着する予定でありましたので、サイレン・カバーもそれに合わせブラックてにフニッシュ。このチョイス、オーナー様にも大いに褒めて頂きまして、めだたしめでたしとなった次第であります。
